The State of AI Gigs in 2026

1,611 active opportunities in our database. 10 categories. 22 platforms. Over 80 languages. Here is a breakdown of what we are seeing across the AI gigs we track.

The Big Picture

As of early June 2026, our database contained 1,611 active, approved AI gig listings across all categories. These are listings we pulled from 20+ sources including Mindrift, Alignerr, Welocalize, Prolific, Mercor, and others.

Of those, 482 list pay of $50/hour or more, and 160 list $100/hour or more. The higher-end roles tend to be domain expert positions where specialized knowledge is the qualification.

The Technical vs. Non-Technical Split

A common assumption is that AI gigs require coding skills. Based on what we have collected:

  • 1,034 opportunities (64%) require no technical background
  • 577 (36%) are technical roles requiring Python, engineering, or similar skills

The non-technical listings include voice acting, transcription, content writing, data labeling, surveys, and domain expert roles where professional experience is the qualification.

Category Breakdown

Development accounts for the most listings at 601 gigs (37%), but this includes many “Freelance AI Trainer” roles that pair domain expertise with Python skills rather than traditional software engineering.

Data Labeling (232 gigs, 14%) and AI Training (219 gigs, 14%) form the next tier. Audio & Voice (212 gigs, 13%) is a category with higher listed pay rates than its volume would suggest.

On the smaller end, Surveys & Research (25 gigs, 2%) and Affiliate & Referrals (1 gig) appear less frequently in our sources.

Pay by Tier

Based on what our listings show, here is a rough breakdown:

Entry-level listings (data labeling, testing) range from $5-$25/hour. These appear frequently and tend to have lower qualification requirements.

Mid-tier listings (AI Training, Content Writing, Audio & Voice) range from $20-$60/hour. These typically require some background in the area.

High-end listings (domain expert roles) range from $80/hour to $300/hour depending on the specialization. Examples from our database include patent attorneys at $100-$150/hour, financial analysts at $80-$110/hour, and an ophthalmologist listing at $300.

One pattern we noticed: non-technical categories often list higher pay than technical ones in our data. Surveys & Research has a median of $83/hour. Freelance sits at $80/hour. Development is at $30/hour.

Languages

Over 80 languages appear in our database. English leads at 117 gigs. Arabic (26), German (23), Spanish (20), Korean (20), Japanese (19), and Mandarin (19) also show up with meaningful counts. Some less common languages like Wolof, Zulu, Pashto, and Nahuatl appear as well.

Babel Audio has listings for voice actors in Hindi, German, Korean, and other languages at $60-$150/hour.

Platform Pay Comparison

Based on the listings we have collected, here is how pay ranges compare across platforms:

  • Mercor: $50-$120/hour for professional services roles
  • DataAnnotation.tech: $30/hour for generalists, $40-$60/hour for domain experts
  • Outlier: $50+/hour for technical roles
  • Mindrift: $30-$150/hour depending on the role (widest range in our data)
  • Babel Audio: $60-$150/hour for voice work
  • Prolific: $8-$15/hour for surveys (easiest to start, no application process)

Role Types We Are Seeing

Across recent listings, some of the more common role types include:

  • Freelance AI Trainers are the most frequently listed role. Companies want domain experts who can also work with Python.
  • Voice actors and audio specialists appear across Babel Audio, Welocalize, and Oneforma listings.
  • Content writers with domain knowledge are listed by multiple platforms.
  • Data labelers for non-English languages show up consistently.
  • Financial and legal professionals are a growing category in our data.

Getting Started

Based on what we track, a common approach for newcomers:

  1. Start with a low-barrier platform. Prolific takes 5 minutes to join with no application. DataAnnotation has a simple starter assessment.
  2. Apply to multiple platforms. Acceptance rates vary. Having a few active accounts gives more options.
  3. Play to your background. If you have professional experience in law, finance, healthcare, engineering, or STEM, domain expert roles tend to list higher pay.
  4. Be patient with payouts. Most platforms pay 1-2 weeks after work completion.
  5. Check for new listings. Our feed updates as we pull new data from sources.
