Who it's for: Professionals with verifiable credentials — attorneys, doctors, PhDs, senior engineers, financial analysts. The application process includes resume screening and sometimes a brief assessment.
The catch: Higher pay comes with higher friction. Onboarding takes 3–6 weeks, and not every application is accepted. Tasks are also less frequent than Outlier — you might get a batch every few weeks rather than daily availability.
Outlier
Outlier (by Scale AI) is one of the largest AI training platforms. They aggregate a high volume of tasks across coding, writing, math, and general knowledge evaluation.
What the pay data shows: Our 17 tracked Outlier gigs average $35/hr, with a range of $8–$75/hr. Coding-heavy tasks tend to pay more, while general writing and evaluation tasks sit at the lower end.
Who it's for: Almost anyone with subject-matter knowledge. The barrier to entry is lower than Mercor — you take a starter assessment and can start earning within days.
The catch:Task availability can be inconsistent. Some weeks you'll have plenty of work, other weeks the queue dries up. Pay rates also vary by project and aren't always transparent upfront.
The Bottom Line
Choose Mercor if you have verifiable professional credentials and want the highest per-hour pay. The application process is longer, but the upside is significantly higher.
